4. Reviewing the Video

Explain to participants that they are going to tackle the video first - because it is the most (immediately) accessible and engaging and because the rest of the content was developed around the video.

Give participants an overview of the scope of the videos. Provide a handout that lists all the videos and the issues and ideas covered in each one. Explain to participants that we are going to preview a video clip.

Ask participants to consider the following question while they watch the video:

  • Does the segment complement your learners' needs and goals? Why or why not?

Preview a portion of Program 2: Matching Skills and Jobs. Show approximately 15 minutes of the tape to the entire group.

After the video clip, ask participants to complete a writing activity. First, ask them to jot down notes in response to the above question. Then, ask them to brainstorm 3 (very general) lesson ideas that meet their learners' needs and complement themes in the video clip.

Engage participants in a discussion about:

  • the relevance of the video
(Encourage participants to interrogate the structure and format of the tape, the characters, the concepts, the pacing, visual cues, etc.)
  • their lesson ideas
