4. Using TV411 to Present a Complete, Integrated Thematic Lesson

Summarizing

Introduce the Content:
Summarizing and re-stating are skills we ask our students to do in a variety of settings. This unit introduces students to summarization and provides an easy, low-preparation way to initiate group conversations from selected readings.

Model the Strategy:

Model of Day 1:

  1. Follow TV411 Teacher’s Guide, pages 32-33

  2. Hand out Good Reading/Good Writing: Jeanie: Issue 18, pages 8-9. Have students read the poem aloud. Discuss vocabulary.

  3. In groups, have students:

    • Summarize the poem in 1 or 2 sentences. Write their summary on chart paper.
    • Think about their personal experiences. Can they relate the poem to something in their lives? Share their experiences with the group.
    • Summarize the poem in one word.
  4. Groups share their 1 or 2 sentence summaries with the class. The teacher guides students to take the best or most important parts of each group summary, adding information as needed, and create one class summary of the reading.

  5. Groups share their 1-word summaries. To develop vocabulary, have class brainstorm synonyms and antonyms for the words.

  6. Show VIDEO: Write Now: Summarizing a Poem: Episode 18

  7. Discuss the video. (See page 35 of TV411 Teacher’s Guide)

Model of Day 2:

  1. Have students review what they learned in the previous class. Emphasize that relating personal experiences to the reading will improve understanding and insight. Show VIDEO: Write Now: Summarizing a Poem: Episode 18 again (for training purposes, it is not necessary to show the video, but let the participants know that this would be the logical step).

  2. Hand out Good Reading/Good Writing: Two Stories by Student Learners: Issue 8, pages 6-7. Have students read the story “Get out of my way” aloud. Discuss vocabulary.

  3. Repeat steps 3-5 from day 1.
Model of Day 3:

  1. Review summarizing.

  2. Hand out song lyrics. Listen to the song and discuss vocabulary.

  3. Repeat steps 3-5 from day 1. (For training purposes, it is not necessary to have the participants do these steps anymore. Mention that this would be the same as the previous days and invite comments).

Mining the Strategy:
Take a few minutes for participants to make any notes. Accept any questions or comments.

Budgeting

In order to familiarize participants with the structure of the Teacher’s Guide, hand out TV411 Teacher’s Guide, pages 67-72. As a whole group, read through the handout, discussing the different sections and showing the videos and print as appropriate.

Reflection and Discussion

Invite participants to share their thoughts and impressions of the units. Ask participants:

  • Could you use this in your classroom?
  • Do you have any questions?
