SESSION IIA1:  Introduction (30 min.)

Objectives: To give participants an overview of the two day workshop and allow participants input on the activities of the two days.

In this session, facilitators will review the agenda for the two day workshop.

Participants will suggest areas of interest that they would like to explore in during the workshop.

Activity

Description

Opening Dialogue

  1. Welcome back and name review.
  2. Discuss Housekeeping issues (bath rooms, fire escape route, breaks/lunch, etc)
  3. Using agenda as framework, discuss workshop agenda.
  • Review list; modify/add according to participants feedback.

Transitioning Statements: Participants must move now from the excitement of seeing each other again to the business at hand. This next activity is a time for quiet reflection of the work already done by participants.

SESSION II2: Focusing on the Projects (30 min.)

Objectives: To help participants reflect back on their own experiences in working with their projects and provide a common framework for the group consideration of the projects.

In this session facilitators will remain silent, giving participants room for quiet reflection.

Participants will focus on questions about their project and begin to consider next steps.

Activity

Description

Participants individually fill out “Pre-presentation Reflections” Template (printed material).

This activity is intended to be an individual time of reflection, and facilitators should tell participants that their answers on the handout will remain private and not be shared with the group. Participants fill out a template that helps them focus on three areas of their projects. First, any questions or concerns that remain about the project, second, any positive outcomes from their project, and third, any negative outcomes.

Transitioning Statements: Facilitators now encourage participants to take a break and remind participants that upon their return, they will be encouraged to present the results of their projects to the group.

SESSION II3: Participant Project Presentations (time varies, approx. 20 minutes each)

Objectives: To have participants share the work they have done on their projects.

During the presentations the facilitators will allow the participants to choose the order in which they present, and participate as learners in the group.

Participants will engage in a group discussion after each presentation

Activity

Description

Participants present their projects and lead follow-up discussions about projects.

Facilitators should participate in a very low key way during the participant presentations, allowing the participants to self-select order of presentations, and to determine the flow of discussion during and after each presentation.

Optional: Should the flow of presentations be interrupted by lunch or a break, a wake-up round could precede the continuation of group presentations. For example: “Three Minute Worst Classroom Experiences” The facilitators begin by sharing the worst classroom experience they have had as educators. For example, one of the facilitators in our group described her first day on the job teaching high school. As she was striding confidently across the front of the room, she tripped on a floor mounted outlet and fell flat on her face. The room was completely silent until a student called out, “Ms. Smith, shall I call the school nurse?” Ms. Smith was touched by the student’s concern, until she found out later that day that the school had no school nurse on staff. Participants who wish may also relate their experiences.

Transition Statement: Depending on the number of presentations in your group, you may want to break up the flow of ‘one after the other’ by using the personal reflection time below. Or, alternately, you may want to save this activity until all participants have had a chance to present.

SESSION II4: Personal Reflection Time (30 min.)

Objectives: To help participants reflect back on the impact of their inquiry project on their continuing practice and to consider the long term effects of the inquiry model on their practice.

During this time the facilitators will remain in the background and answer any questions.

Participants will fill out template online and upload to the Yahoo group.

Activity

Description

Participants fill out the the “Personal Reflection On Inquiry Project” Template online and upload a copy to the Yahoo group.

Participants open up a copy of the the “Personal Reflection On Inquiry Project” Template already uploaded to the Yahoo Group. They save a copy under their own name, fill out the template and upload their personalized copy to the Yahoo group. The template has ten questions that focus on the product, process and next steps of the participant’s inquiry project.

Transition Statement: The next activity is intended to be the last of the day.

SESSION II5:  State Survey at Literacy.org (15 min.)

Objectives: Participants will add information about their particular situations and compare their answers to their colleagues statewide.

Facilitators will provide the password for accessing the state survey online, answer any questions, and show statewide results to participants.

Participants will complete survey online.

During this time the facilitators will review the inquiry model with references to the participants inquiry projects, solicit questions about the model, and prompt participants to consider continuing the use of the inquiry model in their practice.

Participants will consider the inquiry model in light of their projects, ask questions about the model, and consider ways of continuing use of the model in their practice.

Activity:

Description

Review of Inquiry Model using “Action Research” Powerpoint presentation.

Using the Powerpoint presentation as a guide, the facilitators will lead a review of the Inquiry Model, and provide a space for participants to ask any questions about the model and to consider ways to continue their inquiry of their practice after the workshop is over.

SESSION II7:  Reflection Time (1 hour)

Objective: To provide space for participants to reflect on next steps in their use of the inquiry model, and to begin to construct a plan to implement after the workshop.

Activity

Description

Participants fill out the “Reflections on Next Steps” Template and upload them to the Yahoo Group. Participants then share and discuss their next steps.

Using the template, participants reflect on their experience during the workshop, things they have learned during the workshop that they would like to implement in their classroom, and consider changes they might make as a result of attending the workshop over the next week, month, and year. Also, they consider the ways they might continue to collaborate after the workshop concludes. Participants then discuss and share their next steps.

Transition Statement: Facilitators may want to encourage participants to continue to share ideas via the PDK or Yahoo discussion groups.
