Case Study Exploration

(a) Select one of the video case study narratives for viewing based on the interests of the participant group. Present a brief introduction to the case study and provide one or more questions for the participants to consider while watching the video. We have found that guiding questions help to focus participants' attention when viewing extended clips.

Sample Questions:
- What is the teacher doing?
- What are the students doing?
- How is the teacher encouraging participation?
- What kinds of questions are being asked?

Questions specific to each PDK video can be found in the Using PDK section of the website. A link is provided below.

(b) Have participants view the assigned case study narrative on their individual computers. The navigation path is Investigating Practice > Classrooms > [Teacher Name] > Narrative. Ask the participants to make note of their thoughts and their answers to the guiding questions while they view the case study. Also, invite them to explore the Class Products and Related Resources for the case study once they have viewed the clip, which they can do by clicking on the tabs above the video display area.

(c) Group the participants and invite them to share their answers to the guiding questions and their observations of the case study. In our experience, small groups of three to four participants are most likely to elicit the participation of all group members.
