Session One: Overview
3. How is adult education using technology now?

Time: 2 hours, 45 minutes (includes lunch and a break)

Objectives

  • Participants will explore websites in the numeracy collection of NIFL.
  • Participants will report on two websites using the Form for Summarizing Content.

Materials

  • Laptop and hookup
  • Screen
  • Projector
  • Computers
  • Handout 1c Form for Summarzing Content

Procedure

To the Trainer:
This section is self-directed. There is very little for you to do except explain what it’s all about. The strength of the section comes when people share what they found.

1. Tell the group that in this section they get to explore the wonderful world of numeracy on line by visiting the Numeracy links from the National Institute for Literacy Science and Numeracy Special Collection. There is so much information available through these links that it’s hard to begin describing it. They just need to jump in.

2. Tell the group to divide into pairs or groups of 3. Distribute two copies of the Form for Summarizing Content (Handout 1c) to each group for recording their summaries. They have 45 minutes to explore. During that time, the smaller groups should agree on two sites that they want to report on. They will prepare a short summary and use the projector to project the websites on the screen. Tell them that you will break for lunch before the presentations.

3. At the end of 45 minutes, break for lunch. (45 minutes.)

4. After lunch, ask one group to do its report. (In order to save time, one person should handle the projector and one person should read the report.) Allow 5-10 minutes. When that group is finished, ask if anyone has different websites to report on. Allow 5-10 minutes for each group. Allow a total of 60 minutes for this part of the activity.

If you have only a few groups, you can allow more time per group. But it’s important that you not take time to report on the same website more than once. If more than one group has chosen the same website ask if they have anything to add to the report that has already been given rather than do a separate report.

5. Keep repeating the procedure until you either run out of time or everyone has reported out.

6. At the end of the time, take a ten-minute break.
