Procedure

To the Trainer:

When participants evaluate training in adult education, they frequently name the “chance to hear what others are doing” as the best aspect of the training. It’s ironic, then, that so few adult educators take advantage of the collected wisdom represented by on-line discussion lists. It’s true that the quality of discussion lists can vary, and it’s also true that every list won’t meet everyone’s needs all the time. This section allows participants to explore 3 discussion lists, and to subscribe to one.

As before, there is little for you to do here except to facilitate participant navigation of the various lists. In the follow-up discussion, try to get participants to explain how they might use the lists in their practice.

1. Distribute Handout 1d to each person. Explain that this section offers participants an opportunity to get in on the conversation about math by visiting archived discussions at three math discussion lists.

2. Tell everyone that for the next 40 minutes they will:

  • look at archived discussions at all three of the websites
  • subscribe to one discussion list, and
  • summarize one thread from the list they subscribed to

You may not need to use the full 40 minutes so be alert to what people are doing. Everyone will be tired at this point and would welcome a chance to finish a little early.

3. When everyone is finished, or when 40 minutes is up, ask for someone to share what website he/she subscribed to and what they found there. Ask if anyone who also subscribed to that website has anything to add. Ask for another volunteer that chose a different website and repeat the procedure. Allow 30 minutes

4. Take the remaining time to thank participants for their contributions and to answer any questions from the day. Distribute evaluations. Remind participants of the next training date.
