Math Training Module: Using the Internet in Support of GED Math Instruction

Session Three: Geometry, Spatial Sense, and Measurement

Time: 3 hours

Objectives

  • Participants will identify uses for geometry and measurement in daily life.
  • Participants will explore websites and identify learning opportunities on those sites.
  • Participants will define how they would use the websites in teaching geometry and measurement.
  • Participants will evaluate websites using an online rubric.
  • Participants will define barriers to using the websites in their instruction.

To the Trainer:
How do we know where we are? Since the beginning of time we humans have had to find ways to identify where we are, where we’re going, and where we’ve been. Further, we need to be able to describe these locations so that others can accurately find those same places. While “go to the pointed rock beside the river” worked for a while, it lost its effectiveness when we traveled beyond familiar landmarks to areas that needed more precise descriptions. Eventually we learned to describe the organization of our space in mathematical symbols and terms. Maps, measurement, and geometry all help us define our spaces.
