Math Training Module: Using the Internet in Support of GED Math Instruction

Session Two: Problem Solving

Time: 3 hours

Objectives

  • Participants will understand the definition of “math as problem solving.”
  • Participants will explore websites and identify learning opportunities on those sites.
  • Participants will define how they would use the websites in teaching.
  • Participants will evaluate websites using an online rubric.
  • Participants will define barriers to using the websites in their instruction.

To the Trainer:
In this section you make the distinction between math as problem solving and math as answer getting. Too often our learners have experienced the latter—a classroom where all the emphasis was on the correct answer with little time for explanations of the process, or discussions of how different people arrived at different conclusions. This section helps participants begin to think about a different way of doing math.
