Math Training Module: Using the Internet in Support
of GED Math Instruction
Session Four: Data Analysis, Probability, and Statistics
2. Evaluating Websites
To the Trainer:
In this next section you have little input. All you need to do is direct
the activity at the beginning and be available to answer questions during
the evaluation of the websites.
Procedure
1. Tell the group that so far we’ve investigated the websites,
but now it’s time to evaluate them using an online rubric.
2. Ask participants to form pairs and to follow the directions on Handout
4b. First they will visit the two evaluation websites to inform themselves
about the rubrics and what they evaluate, and they will select one rubric
to use.
3. Either assign websites to each pair, or ask them to choose two sites
to evaluate. You want to make sure that each of the sites is covered.
Allow 30 minutes.
Depending on the size of your group, you may need to
assign only one website to each pair, or you could assign websites to
individuals rather than pairs.
4. When 30 minutes is up, ask each pair to share its evaluation of their
assigned website(s). Encourage questions from the group. Encourage other
participants to take notes so they have a review of each website to keep
and use. Allow 20 minutes.
5. Wrap up by answering any questions the participants may have. Break
for a 45-minute lunch.
