EFA Training Module

Technical Considerations (30 minutes)

Objective
Participants will consider the logistics of teaching with technology, both in a technical sense and a pedagogical sense. Equipped with these considerations, participants will feel more confident about their role in instructional computer labs.

1. Technical Requirments (10 Minutes)

Materials

Procedure

  • Review technical requirements as described in the handout. The focus of this information is general and should not lead to an in-depth discussion of technology, since participants may represent a range of experience and comfort regarding technology. Rather, this information is provided so that participants can return to their schools equipped with information for their instructional technology support staff.
  • Encourage participants to refer to the teacher resources on the EFA website (which they’ve just explored) for answers to additional technology related questions.

2. Effective Lab Management Strategies (20 Minutes)

Materials

Procedure

  • Introduce the activity: this handout is intended to help participants consider the logistical challenges of teaching in a computer lab setting. Ask participants the following leading questions. (5 minutes)
    • How is teaching in the lab similar to teaching in the classroom? How are they different?
    • What classroom management strategies are likely to transfer effectively in the lab? What strategies will you need to modify/ replace with different strategies?
  • Distribute the handout and facilitate participants’ completion of the questions on page 1. (10 minutes).
    • Use the bell to demonstrate the management strategy described in the handout. (The trainer is encouraged to use the bell again as an actual management tool during the next activity, Lesson Planning.)
  • Wrap up the discussion by referring to page 2. (5 minutes)
    • Which strategies to you already use with your students in the lab?
    • Name one strategy you are likely to use in the future.
