EFA Training Module

Synthesis and Reflection (15 minutes)

Objective
These complementary activities are intended to help participants a) create closure to the day in a friendly, informal setting; b) compare their original expectations for this training that which they’ve learned today; c) learn a new wrap-up activity that they can use in the classroom.

1. What do we know NOW? (5 Minutes)

Materials

  • Marker (ideally, a different color from the others used)
  • Flipchart pages from the first activity: Breaking the Ice: What do we know?

Procedure

  • Return to the flip chart page containing participants’ comments on what they knew about EFA at the beginning of the day. Draw their attention to the last two questions, “What do you already know about EFA?” and “What do you hope to learn today?”
  • As participants read through their initial comments, invite them to make additions and/or amendments to their comments.
  • Monitor time; to save time, you should do the writing for this activity. The unique color will help participants see which information is “old” and which is “new.”

2. What do we want to take with us (5 Minutes)

Materials

  • Blackboard and chalk, or flipchart and pens
  • Post-it notes, various colors

Procedure

  • On the blackboard, draw a stick figure of a man carrying a briefcase.
  • Distribute approximately five post-it notes to each participant. Provide more as needed.
  • Draw participants’ attention to a) the man’s head; b) the man’s heart; and c) the man’s briefcase.
  • Corresponding to the drawing, invite participants to write one detail on each post-it about a) what they learned today; b) how they feel about EFA as a product; and c) what they want to remember about today (or about EFA).
  • Have participants stick their post-it notes on the blackboard according to components a), b) and c) above. (For example, a comment about you want to remember should be posted in or near the man’s head.)
  • Give participants time to stand in front of the drawing to read others’ comments.

3. Training Feedback (5 Minutes)

Materials

Procedure

  • Ask participants to reflect on the content and quality of today’s training session. Their responses will be used to improve future trainings.
  • Comments regarding content may be shared with the lead author of this module, Karen Taylor. Karen may be contacted at karentaylor@miis.alumlink.com
