EFA Training Module
Surfing www.myefa.org (60 minutes)
Objective
These discovery activities will give participants hands-on time with the
EFA website while guiding them toward key features of the site. The Surfing
Safari handouts offer a structure through which to explore the EFA website
resources.
Materials
- Handouts
- A bell or other pleasant noise maker (for effective lab management)
Lab Preparation
- www.myefa.org, viewed with Netscape 7.1 or Explorer 6.0 or higher
Procedure
1. EFA Surfing Safari #1: Student Resources (30 Minutes)
- Draw participants’ attention to the page of the handout where
they can take notes on their observations regarding both website content
and website navigation. It is important that participants relate their
own website navigation experiences (including as well as highlights)
to how they can best introduce the site to their students.
- Let participants know that whenever you ring the bell, they should
stop what they’re doing on the computer, stand up, and face you.
(This is a lab management technique that will be addressed later in
the training.)
- Use the bell sparingly – perhaps in the middle of the activity
as a comprehension check, again toward the end to signal that a few
minutes remain, and one more time at the end.
- Circulate as participants explore the EFA website. Encourage participants
to use the Questions and Answers link as questions arise.
- Monitor time carefully – suggest that participants not watch
all videos in their entirety. Rather, they should focus on the usability
of the site, the format of the activities and the content of the lessons.
2. EFA Surfing Safari #2: Teacher Resources (30 Minutes)
- This activity focuses on the teacher resources available on the EFA
website.
- Refer to the guidelines shown above (except for the first one).
