EFA Training Module
Digging Into EFA: Lesson Demonstration (75 minutes)
Objective
This demonstration provides participant with an example of how they might
integrate the use of video in the classroom. The demonstration models
before, during, and after activities that compliment the video. The delivery
method is VHS, chosen because it is the most accessible and is adaptable
to many teaching settings.
Materials
Procedure
1. Lesson Demonstration (60 Minutes)
- Using Lesson Plan #1, model the lesson with participants acting as students.
- At the end of the demonstration, give each participant a copy of Lesson Plan #1.
To the Trainer:
This is an authentic lesson plan originally designed for 3 hours of instruction.
The trainer will therefore need to familiarize herself with the lesson
plan and modify the pacing of the lesson. It is important to highlight
the essential features of the lesson, i.e. the before, during and after
activities. For the sake of this demonstration and due to the limited
time available, the trainer might want to alternate between demonstrating
key activities and describing (briefly) others. That said, the episode
should be shown in its entirety as described in the lesson; we have found
in past trainings that participants, like students, want to see how the
episode ends.
2. Analysis/Discusion (15 Minutes)
- What kinds of before, during and after activities did you see demonstrated
in the lesson? What did these activities achieve, pedagogically?
- What other themes and/or language features could be exploited in this
episode? Consider cultural issues, social issues (e.g. discrimination,
nepotism), pragmatic skills (e.g. interviewing for a job), non-verbal
communication, grammar and potential writing prompts.
This discussion is often rich and could continue for
some time. Watch time carefully. Encourage participants to write down
their ideas (briefly) before moving to the next activity. They will have
an opportunity to revisit these ideas later in the day, during the lesson
planning activity.
