Wallingford Adult Education: Reflections on Leadership*

This reflection responds to the following questions:

Jean Mantzaris, Director , Wallingford Adult Education

Differences between Year 1 and Year 2:

My role as a leader of technology implementation in Year 2 was enhanced by the strong leadership of Pamela Andersen and a faculty who embraced technology. Pam’s ability to teach teachers and students is unsurpassed as is her ability to integrate technology into the curriculum. Technology was demystified. It was fun., extremely useful and relevant to the task at hand. Student learning became a shared responsibility at our Center.

New Challenges and Actions during Year 2:

A new challenge that emerged in Year 2 was combining ABE and ESL students in the same class. Teachers used themes and students created using computers, software, digital cameras, research on the internet and Writers. Many products were produced including an International Cookbook, essays on “What food Means To Me,” and monthly newsletters highlighting student work. Students shared this information with one another and saw them posted on line. The variety of products created was remarkable and again integration (students and curriculum) was a key.
