Program Description

The second year of this project improved and expanded upon the first year. We:

  • Continued to employ a full-time technology teacher. She:
    • Taught two High School Credit Diploma classes each semester—Computer Literacy and School-to-Career using the Internet and an online course in career development.
    • Gave staff development courses to the staff on Tuesdays. They included Windows, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
    • Worked with ESL, ABE and GED teachers whose students used the lab to align the work they are doing in the lab to the work in the classroom.
    • Offered open lab time between 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.
    • Was the liaison between Stamford Adult Education and the City of Stamford IT Department and various vendors (Dell, ELLIS, etc.)
  • Continued to use the wireless lab and ELLIS software with two beginning and two intermediate level ESL classes for 50% of their classroom instruction.
  • Used the wireless lab and ELLIS software with two advanced ESL classes in the evening for 50% of their instructional time.
  • Used technology (ModuMath, TV411, Pre-GED and GED software) to improve the skills of ABE/GED students; 25% to 50% of their instruction was using technology.
  • Used laptop computers in the GED classroom.
  • Used Rosetta Stone and a phonics program with survival and low beginner students in the program facilitator’s office.
  • Introduced project-based instruction to an advanced ESL class. This included the use of the Internet and word processing.
