Program Description

During Year Two of Technology Implementation Norwich Adult Education continued to build upon the progress made in Year One and expanded efforts to involve additional staff and students in the integration of technology throughout our program. Professional development expanded from the staff in Norwich to staff throughout the fourteen-town Cooperative. The integration of technology into the curriculum has expanded as well. In addition to continuing the ELLIS software project in the ESOL Program, other adult education programs have benefited from the introduction of new software, word processing capability and increased utilization of the Internet. Finally, efforts have been made to continue to expand and improve our website.

Accomplishments

  • Head teacher worked with HSCDP teachers to train them how to submit their CARS work electronically to our CARS staff.
  • Broadcast of Crossroads Café to the greater Norwich community on cable TV in collaboration with Norwich Free Academy TV station. All episodes were broadcast three times per week, September through June.
  • Extended use of e-mail, attachments, & listserv between staff and between sites.
  • Full use of ELLIS lab by 5 daytime ESOL classes, 2 afternoon classes, 2 evening classes.
  • Use of English For All in the summertime ESOL class at the FRC site.
  • ESOL Advanced daytime class production of electronic newsletter.
  • Submitting this EOY report via e-mail.

Problems/Barriers

Although we have had no problems with the grant, the following issues impacted our ability to deliver our program with maximum effectiveness:

  • Cable TV was not available at our site at 279 Main Street.
  • Budget constraints limited the availability of support staff to assist ESOL teachers in our ELLIS lab.
  • Utilization of laptops in HSCDP was hindered due to glitches.
  • The ESOL ‘survival’ class was unable to use our ESOL lab second semester last year due to the large numbers of students and the lack of support staff in the ESOL lab.
  • Interfacing daytime ESOL, evening ESOL, and enrichment computer use is challenging.
  • Time, effort, and financial resources to maintain equipment remain a challenge.
  • Staff at outlying sites are unable to utilize some of the resources available to our main site.
  • We do not have direct access to our website. We must wait for the tech rep of the school system to upload for us. This has been prohibitive for posting class information for students.
