Norwich Public Schools/Adult Education: Technology-facilitated
Lesson Plan (Oregon Trail)*
Teacher:
Lauri Butler
Class/Level:
History, High School Credit Diploma Program
Lesson Duration:
3 sessions
Objectives (Learning Goals):
- To gain experience in problem solving by overcoming trials
at each stage of the journey.
- To learn about planning by forming long-term strategies and
carrying them out through the journey.
- To improve writing skills using built-in diary to capture
events encountered en route.
Rationale:
The students need to learn about the expansion
of Americans from East to West and the impact this had on the
country and on the native cultures. The game also enables the
students to study the geography of the U.S. in greater detail.
Finally, students can practice journal writing.
Technologies Used:
- A television with a VCR was used to play the video “West
to Oregon: Along the Oregon Trail".
- Computers and Oregon Trail II software
Other Materials:
None
Learning and Teaching Activities:
Students will be introduced to the Oregon Trail
through a brief lecture and discussion. Students are then shown
the video for the remainder of the first session with an allowance
of time for questions.
During the second and third sessions, students
use computers to play “Oregon Trail II”. They are
to keep track of their progress through the use of the program’s
personal diaries.
Evaluation of Learning:
Students are evaluated informally by their comments
and by how they answer questions during the discussions and after
the video.
Students are evaluated formally through the
journal writing and progress made during their journeys.
