End-of-Year Report as of June 30, 2003
Program Description
The Technology Implementation Project has been
very successful for a second year as we continue to address the
main goal of this grant: “To continue to promote sustained
student learning through a technology rich environment and excellence
in teaching”. The major focus during the first year was on
building an environment with available and varied technology. During
the second year, the focus shifted to revising and/or creating curricula
in all programs that integrates the seamless use of technology.
All AHSCDP courses integrate
considerable use of technology on a daily basis. For example, in
AHSCDP science classes, the curriculum and instruction includes
the use of a combination of internet research, demonstrations using
the document camera, and both virtual and hands-on experiments.
An LCD projector is used to display images onto a large screen for
class discussion. In GED and ABE, the curricula guide the instruction,
which integrates technology. The GED and ABE classes use interactive,
web-based research projects and group projects using power-point
and other technology, videos, tapes. Videotaped master lessons are
under development. All program curricula require writing on a regular
basis. Technology provides tools for adding interest to writing.
For example, one class does a group activity in which students correct
student-written samples on the electronic white board, using the
capabilities of screen capturing and printing.
The installation of a sophisticated
ESL language lab allowed for expansion of curricula options for
ESL. In addition the Synergy system used to show videos such as
“On Common Ground” which are correlated to the ESL curriculum
each student has access to an ear-phone equipped computer. The staff
has created a directory of Internet materials for ESL that may be
used on a self-paced basis by the students. Additional computer
software and LCD projectors are also to computers.
Each department has a Master
Technology Teacher. These teachers have received additional technology
training and are available to teachers to help deliver instruction
that integrates the seamless use of technology.
Infusing technology
in the various curricula throughout our program has made it possible
to facilitate instruction and enhance student learning.
