Middletown Adult Education: Resource Review: ModuMath*

Teacher: Lin Schroeder and Ben Veronick, AHSCDP Teachers

Type of Resource: Software

Description:

ModuMath is a highly interactive math tutorial software program that uses video lessons to teach. Topics include whole numbers, decimals, percents, signed numbers, and topics in Geometry. ModuMath video lessons offer practice with immediate feedback and hints for incorrect answers. In addition to the lessons, the course also includes tests and study guides with more practice and lesson summaries. A management system allows a teacher to enroll students and track student progress.

How the resource was used in class:

ModuMath is used as the main teaching tool in my remedial math class. I assign the lessons that they need to do, and they work independently at their computers. I circulate around the room, offering additional help as needed.

The things I like most about the resource are as follows:

  • The students like it!
  • The students can easily work at their own pace.
  • It offers audio and visual, offering a variety of learning modalities.
  • It offers immediate feedback.
  • It is thorough in coverage.

Limitations and suggestions to overcome shortcomings:

Some of the techniques for doing math problems are different than the traditional ways that most of us have been taught. If the student is having trouble with one particular method I offer an alternative way of approaching a problem.
