End-of-Year Report as of June 30, 2003
Program Description
Year two of this grant allowed us to infuse technology
using the ELLIS curriculum and The Writer into 4 additional sites
in the Foothills consortium: Thomaston, Region #15 (Southbury),
Region #7 (Winsted), and Region #1 (Falls Village). Each site received
a cart with 10 wireless laptops, 10 Writers, headphones, a screen,
projector and printer. All software was installed and ready for
fall classes. This was a major improvement from Year 1 and allowed
sites to hold classes initially using Computer 4 Kids instructors.
Accomplishments
Computer 4 Kids provided initial computer training at
the four new sites. Teachers attended these classes for additional support
and to reinforce their technology skills. All sites held separate technology
classes in addition to their regular ESL classes. Torrington provided a lab
situation in which classes rotated on a scheduled basis.
Problem Areas
Some Site Coordinators and ESL teachers felt that the
technology training provided by Computer 4 Kids trainers was more effective
than others. The training sessions seemed to work best when high level ESL
students were chosen for the computer training and the ESL teacher had more
experience with computers.
