Education Connection: Technology-facilitated Lesson
Plan (Grocery Shopping)*
Teacher:
Marion Lizzi, Foothills Adult & Continuing Education
Class/Level:
ESL Beginner
Lesson Duration:
50 minutes, 2 times per week
Objectives (Learning Goals):
To develop "food fluency" in the particular real-life
activity of grocery shopping via vocabulary, posters, handouts,
student workbook and conversation with simple sentences.
Rationale:
Food "fluency" should include a familiarity with terms
such as fast food, junk food, and health food in addition to shopping in a
supermarket and its vocabulary.
Technologies Used:
English Zone.com and www.manythings.org
(used for categorizing food), ELLIS*, The Writer for simple sentences
Other Materials:
Plastic food = bananas (sound); color=yellow;
taste (v.) sweet (adj.) Education "kits" and poster of food pyramid
(issued by Euro RSCG Impact) with products
Food Games = salt, tuna, apply, egg
Learning and Teaching Activities:
- Compare/contrast shopping in USA to student's country.
- Write a simple recipe or menu.
- Conversation re: favorite foods and how prepared ("roundtable" discussion).
Evaluation of Learning:
Very good response and class participation.
Comments:
Because there was an "extension" period for 6 weeks
after the 2nd semester, the combined beginners class spent more time on
ELIS and made wonderful progress, having already learned much of the
"supermarket procedures" from previous lessons. ELLIS provided further
learning re: pricing, bargains, on sale, etc. I think that, if possible,
an ELLIS only night (2 hours) is appropriate, especially toward the end
of each semester, when vocabulary can be expanded upon.
