Education Connection: Resource Review: ELLIS*

Teacher: Sol Becker— Foothills Adult & Continuing Education Connection ESL Program

Type of Resource: ELLIS Program - multimedia presentation, video and software

Description:

ELLIS is a multimedia program for ESL students where they can select video segments by communicative or grammatical objectives. At the end of each segment they can test themselves. ELLIS also has computer-based games and activities.

How ELLIS was used in class:

One of the two hour classes is with the program for a total of 2 hours a week.

The things I like most about ELLIS are as follows:

• Beginning students have real difficulties, even with the Introductory they still find it hard and get a little frustrated.

• For the more advanced group it is especially great, as they have a chance to listen and produce the language, exercising their pronunciation.

Limitations of ELLIS and suggestions to overcome shortcomings:

Most of my beginning students not just have limitations with the language, but also limitations with their computer skills. I would suggest helping them overcome this problem through computer training would be helpful.
