Biography : Ashwani Sharma is on the teaching faculty of the Regional Resource Center at Punjab University Chandigarh India. By profession he is a teacher and his basic area of research is training in adult literacy. He is involved in policy making and implementation of various activities undertaken in basic literacy, post literacy, and continuing education programs. Synopsis : (Mr. Sharma wrote his presentation in conjunction with Mr. Gupta.) In his country report he discussed in detail the history of the literacy movement in India during the pre and post independence period. He highlighted some of the weak areas of the programs in the 1960Ős, 1970Ős, and mid 1980Ős which ultimately led the launching of the National Literacy Mission in 1988 and subsequent total literacy campaigns. The elements of which are area specific, time bound, result oriented, and cost effective all over India. The second part of the presentation focused on training strategies being followed in literacy programs at the state and district levels to prepare its volunteers, Master Trainers, and Resource persons.
