Bio :

Nancy Ducos is currently the Training Coordinator for the Marin Institute for the Prevention of Alcohol and Other Drug Problems in San Rafael, California. She facilitates trainings on public policy, community organizing, and environmental prevention. In her previous employment, she coordinated a project to promote the self-sufficiency of Latinas through the initiation of licensed childcare home businesses. In 1998 she initiated a grassroots-volunteer based literacy project to support Latinos to become literate on their native language. She believes that non-formal education is a very powerful tool for social justice. Nancy has a M.A. on Mass Communication from the University of Puerto Rico and is the recipient of the 1999 Martin Luther King, Jr. Humanitarian Award given by the Marin County Human Rights Commission, California. Recently she also received the Daniel E. Koshland Civic Unity Award for the year 2000.

Synopsis :

Ms. Ducos spoke on two topics while at SLTP. The first was on the status of bilingual education in the Canal Neighborhood of San Raphael, a suburb of San Francisco, California. The second was on the development grassroots literacy program known as "Comunitario de Alfabetizaci—n."
