EDUCATION CENTERS FOR DEVELOPMENT (ECDs): AN ALTERNATIVE TO BASIC EDUCATION

CREATION: 1993

A CED IS A CENTER MANAGED BY THE COMMUNITY. IT IS INDIVIDUAL AND COLLECTIVE PROMOTING

SITUATION IN 2000: 202 CENTERS FOR 7000 CHILDREN / 400 IN PROF. TRAINING

CONTEXT

  1. INEFFICIENCY OF FORMAL SYSTEM TO RECRUIT CHILDREN TOO OLD TO ATTEND FUNDAMENTAL SCHOOL AND TOO YOUNG TO GO TO LITERACY CENTERS FOR ADULTS
  2. ENLARGE THE BASE OF EDUCATION PYRAMID
  3. REDUCE INEQUALITY BETWEEN SEXES

 

OBJECTIVES

  1. INSTILL IN THE CHILDREN THE CAPACITY TO READ AND WRITE AND DO SOME NUMERACY TO DEFEND THEIR INTEREST AND ORIENT THEIR CHOICES
  2. DEVELOP AMONG THE CHILDREN AN ELEMENTARY COMPREHENSION AND A SCIENTIFIC CONCEPT OF THE PROCESSES THAT ARE LINKED TO THEIR PHYSICAL AND SOCIO-ECONOMIC ENVIRONMENT
  3. OBJECTIVES (CONT.)

  4. TEACH THE CHILDREN THE KNOWLEDGE, THE KNOW-HOW TO IMPROVE THEIR PHYSICAL WELL-BEING, MAINLY IN HEALTH PROTECTION AND NUTRITION
  5. PROVIDE THE CHILDREN WITH A PROFESSIONAL TRAINING THAT ARE LINKED TO PRODUCTION AND TECHNOLOGY

STUDY CYCLE: 4 YRS

(PROJECTION: EXTEND TO 9 YRS)

TARGET GROUPS: CHILDREN AGED 9-15 (BOTH SEXES) DROP-OUTS OR NOT

NUMBER PER CLASSROOM: 30 (15 BOYS/15 GRILS)

LOCATION: WHERE THERE IS NO SCHOOL. POSSIBILITY OF MORE THAN A CED IN THE SAME VILLAGE

  3. RECRUITMENT LEVEL: FORMER STUDENTS FROM FORMAL SCHOOL WITH GRADE 8 OR 9 LEVEL, YOUNG GRADUATES, OR NEO LITERATE
  4. CRITERIA: AT LEAST 6 YRS OF FORMAL SCHOOL; HAVE NOTIONS IN MANAGING A BASIC LITERACY CLASS; BEING ABLE TO STAY WITHIN THE COMMUNITY MAX. 6 MTHS

  6. ENSURES THE INTEGRATION OF ECD TO THE DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES OF THE COMMUNITY
  7. MANAGE THE ECD THROUGH COMMITTEE OF 5 MEMBERS (3 MEN AND 2 WOMEN)
