Literacy in the Workplace
Date of publication:
Mon, 1997-05-05 As we get closer to the end of the century, it becomes increasingly clear that
one of the most potent forces to have impacted on the economic and social
environment of the countries across the globe, especially since the last
decade, is the force of globalization. This is reflected in increased pace of
economic liberalization, freer flow of technology, integrated financial
markets and corporate strategies of multinational companies that operate
on a premise of homogenous market (ILO/ROAP, 1996). This has far
reaching implications not only for the way the enterprises are
reorganizaing themselves to meet the changing market demands but also
for the way the work is done keeping in view the aspects of cost, quality
and flexibility, and hence substantially, on the workers performance. One
of the critical elements in the context of globalization is international
competitiveness; and for achieving and maintaining international
competitiveness what is required is high productivity, of both men and
machine. The importance of workplace literacy in this context, therefore,
becomes self-evident.
