Literacy Online

The Purpose of Schooling (As Opposed to Education) is to Transform the Child of a Peasant into a Clerk

Margaret Mead (1944)

This now applies to many forms of literacy instruction too.

  • Some Pathways Through Which Literacy Improves Productivity, Health, etc.
  • Changes self-image and social relations in the household and community
  • Introduces new reference groups
  • Changes socio-economic expectations of self and others
  • Imparts new knowledge and skills

  • IF SCHOOLING IS THE BEST WAY TO MAKE PEOPLE LITERATE, WHY INVEST IN ADULT EDUCATION?

    • Because some populations can't be cost-effectively reached by schooling
    • Because literate mothers send and keep their children in school
    • Because political and economic turmoil has denied opportunities to go to school
    • Because "de-schooling" is happening in many countries

    LESSONS

    • Literacy programs are more effective when literacy is an incidental outcome
    • Teaching adults to read is not enough They need basic knowledge too
    • While NG0s are often effective in providing literacy education, they often need capacity building
    • Literacy providers will have to become more results oriented
    • Scarce resources should be concentrated on programs providing a second chance for school leavers
