BASIC STATISTICS: Literacy Quiz: Concluding Remarks

The questions on this short quiz did not cover all of the key aspects of measuring, reporting, and interpreting literacy statistics. This quiz is a brief reminder that many issues are involved in understanding the complexity of the literacy situation facing nations and peoples.

Among the issues illustrated by the quiz are the following:

  • Any single statistic (e.g., literacy rate, number of illiterate adults) gives only a partial understanding of the literacy situation of a specific nation.
  • Measures of literacy used in official publications have limitations and may underestimate the severity of the literacy situations in many countries.
  • It is important to consider the date of the data. The United Nations and World Bank data are updated only every few years and may not reflect recent changes or actual direct assessment figures from the countries.
  • Reported statistics are aggregated and may not fully reflect literacy levels of important subgroups (e.g., different language groups) in a nation.

These and other issues discussed elsewhere in this program or in the Statistics Resources section suggest that published literacy statistics can be a valuable source for comparative information and can help decision-making and policy-setting, yet they have several limitations and should be used with caution.
