BASIC STATISTICS

This section allows you to view key literacy data for individual countries, compare statistics for up to five different countries, or compare statistics across the seven world regions as defined in the UNESCO World Education Report 1998: Teachers and Teaching in a Changing World. Also included is a help page to define the statistical indicators used, a region locater to find the UNESCO region for any specific country, and a short, interactive Literacy Quiz to test your knowledge of information and issues concerning literacy statistics.

Searching for Statistics?

There are two options available on this International Literacy Explorer website to view our database of literacy and literacy-related statistics from around the world. One option allows you to download a database module to your own computer. You will not be able to add to or modify the data in this module, but you will be able to perform a variety of searches and print screens showing the information that you requested. If you would like to choose this option, click on your computer's operating system below and the module will automatically download.

The second option is to explore the statistics database online at this website. If you choose this option, continue to read and make your choices from the items listed below.

Country. View statistics for a specific country of your choice.

Compare Countries. View and compare statistics for up to five (5) different countries of your choice.

Compare Regions. View and compare statistics for the seven UNESCO world regions.
