National Center on Adult Literacy, Graduate School of Education, University of Pennsylvania
Findings: Descriptive
Statistics of Survey Respondents
Public school adult literacy programs comprised 50% of the respondents. The next
largest organizational type was community-based organizations (15%), followed by
University outreach/extension (13%) and community college (10%) based programs. About 48% of the programs were located in small town or rural locations
more than 30 miles from a metropolitan area, 27% were located in small towns or cities
within a 30 mile radius of a metropolitan area, 12% were in city suburbs, and 13%
were located directly in inner city sites. About 35% of the sample were single site
programs, another 45% had between two and nine program sites, the remaining 20% had ten
or more individual sites.
Responding programs together served approximately 71,500 students annually.
The number of students served per year by individual programs ranged from less than
10 students to about 4471, with a mean of about 555 students per year. Pre-GED, GED,
and ESL students made up the largest subpopulations with ABE students also making
up a significant percentage.

A total of 6,167 employees/volunteers work in these programs, including 287 administrators, 307 full-time instructors, 1,215 part-time instructors, and 4,358 volunteer tutors.
