Instructional Technology Utilization Survey of Mid-Western Adult Literacy Programs

John Sabatini, Senior Researcher
National Center on Adult Literacy, Graduate School of Education, University of Pennsylvania

Key Findings: Technology Funding/Finances

Approximately three quarters of the programs surveyed indicated that they have a formal technology plan.

Approximately half of those surveyed did not respond to the questions about finances. The charts below reflect the responses of the approximately 80 programs who provided information. Of those, 45% have budgeted less than $5,000 per year for computer hardware and software over the past three years, another 24% have budgeted between $5,000 and $10,000.

Eleven programs had budgets in excess of $5,000 a year for technology training for program staff. Another 24 programs had training budgets of less than $1,000 per year for the last three years.

Programs were evenly divided between those that purchase computer technology from operating budgets and those with other sources.

Of those who receive additional funds, about 45 programs received state or local grants and 25 programs received federal grants.

Program directors were involved in making decisions about technology purchases in about 65% of the programs surveyed. Other important stakeholders who participated in decision making were instructors in 47% of programs (74 out of 158), and technology specialists or coordinators in about 41% of the programs (64 out of 158).
