Project CONNECT is a U.S Department of Education funded technology development project. The goal of Project CONNECT (2001-04) is to create supplemental web-based instruction for intermediate level adult ESL learners. Partners in the project include PBS and the Jefferson County Public Schools in Kentucky. The self-paced units focus on working in the United States, continuing one's education in the United States, and civic participation. All of the site material is written specifically for adults learning English with an emphasis on listening and reading.

What is it?

Project CONNECT is a web-based instructional program for adult intermediate learners of English as a Second Language. The program is designed to help English language learners gain the linguistic skills necessary to enter into and progress in the workplace, to function in society, and to prepare for post-secondary education. To that end, the units within Project CONNECT will incorporate SCANS skills, relevant cultural information, explicit language learning strategies and fundamental technology information.

Authentic and engaging materials within the Project CONNECT activities and tasks will aid learners to better understand and successfully adapt to the workplace and/or school and the larger cultural environment. Project CONNECT is being jointly developed by PBS LiteracyLink, the National Center on Adult Literacy (NCAL) at the University of Pennsylvania and Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) in Kentucky.

Content

Project CONNECT components will include nine instructional units, Internet activities, listening exercises, communication features, an online dictionary, video passages and a basic Internet tutorial. Learners receive embedded feedback in activities throughout the site. Please contact www.KET.org for more information on Project CONNECT.
