Workplace Essential Skills Training Module

8. Collaborative Activity - Creating a Sample Lesson

(Note: paragraphs formatted like this on this page are facilitator comments.)

If time permits, ask participants to separate into small working groups. (Facilitators should select small group configurations before the training, based on similarities in student populations and program goals.) Group members work together to "flesh out" one lesson plan - using the materials reviewed during the day. Be sure to provide basic guidelines for the lesson; for example, ask them to build before, during, and after viewing activities into the lesson plan. Also, direct their attention to the second half of Elmore's article because it suggests different approaches to video viewing.

This activity is designed to help participants synthesize the various components of Workplace Essential Skills. It should also reinforce collaboration among group members - to a targeted end. Participants should have a better sense of the "behind-the-scenes" work involved in planning a lesson around any new resource.

A representative from each group will share their lesson plan with the rest of the group.
