Setting Ground Rules for On-Line Collaboration

Objectives:

  • Establish rules to support robust on-line collaboration
  • Create a set of reasonable expectations for participants and facilitators
  • Evaluate the session for the purpose of making positive changes
  • Answer any questions about the Inquiry Projects before participants leave the Institute

Activity

Ask participants to set the ground rule for the following questions:

- How often should you post to the group?

- How often should you check the group?

- What types of dialogs are appropriate?

We found that it was imperative to set up rules for collaboration before the break, or that most participants wouldn't be as active as was desirable. We invited the teachers to give their input into the rules, and found that they put more stringent guideline on themselves than we would have. In all three of the Institutes we conducted, participants were required to check the group site at least twice a week, and post to the message board at least once a week. We found that most of the participants did engage in collaboration, and we were able to send a personal contact (E-mail or even a phone call) to those who did not.
